T his celestial tribute features a talented congregation o f stars from Gospel music and television. An exciting two hour special, this glorious musical event centered around Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday. The “Fifteenth Annual StellarGospel Music Awards” is scheduled to air nationw ide from January 14 to February 6,2000. The global community has been greatly influenced and impacted by Gospel music. This new millennium extravaganza salute to the finest in Gospel music with a phenomenal line up o f celebrity talent set to perform and present. Gospel legend Bobby Jo n e s, G o sp el a rtis t D onnie McClurkin and Gospel diva Vicki W inans hosted the 2000 Stellar Gospel Music Awards. They were jo in ed on stage w ith incredible performances by Yolanda Adams, Richard Smallwood & Vision, Gospel G angstaz, Kim B urrell, L am ar Campbell & Spirit o f Praise, Five Young Men, Krik W'halum featuring Paul Jackson Jr., Mighty Clouds o f Joy, Nancey Jackson, Mississippi Mass Choir and New Direction. This year’s star-studded presenters were Kirk Franklin, Dottie Peoples, Gladys Knight, Spiritual Pieces, Ametría, Dawkins & Dawkins and Luther Barnes. Also included in this year’s celebrity line-up was Mathew St. Patrick (“All My Children”), Terri J. Annual Inner Peace Retreat welcomes Bishop De Roo TMAJ’s The annual Inner Peace Retreat will be held on Saturday, February 5 at St. Pius X parish (1280 NW Saltzman Road) in Cedar Mill. The retreat will run from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. the Inner Peace Retreat is sponsored by the Archdiocese o f Portland’s Office o f Justice and Peace, and is hosted this year by the Social Ministry Council o f St. Pius X parish. The presenters for this year’s retreat will be Bishop Remi De Roo, retired Bishop ofVictoria, Canada, and Pearl Gervais. The morning session wi 11 focus on "Sources o f Inner Peace,” and the afternoon session will consider “Outer Justice Actions” as inner peace becomes alive in public life. Bishop Remi De Roo was bom and raised in Swan Lake. Manitoba. He was ordained a priest in 1950, and received a Sacred Theology Doctorate in 1952 from the Angelicum University in Rome. He was named Bishop ofVictoria in 1962, and attended the Second Vatican Council as the youngest bishop in attendance. He has served on several committees ofthe Canadian Conference ofCatholic Bishops, including the CCCB Social Affairs Commission form 1973 -1 9 8 7 , and again from 1991 -1995. He served a chairman o f this Commission form 1980- 1985, and served on the Vatican Commission for Culture. Bishop De Roo has contributed to numerous publications on a variety o f topics including spirituality, prayer, theology, ethics, peace, health care, and agriculture and the economy. Ameda Battle Givens was the first child bom to the loving union o f Eally Battle and Mary Gregors Battle in Wellston, Oklahoma on April 23,1912. Armeda attended Douglas Grammar School in Fallis, OK & Dunbar High School in Wellston, OK and completed business classes at Yakima Valley College in Yakima, Washington. In 1930, she united with Bethlehem Baptist Church in Fallis, Oklahoma, Rev. Augustana Lutheran Church Brown was her Pastor.
